UAF psychology senior Rene Headley ran in the Boston Marathon April 15 but was unable to finish because of the bombings. Read her story about the event in her blog at:

A few statistics abut this year's Boston Maratho:

  • 23,336 started the event

  • 17,580 crossed the finish line

  • 4,510 passed the 40K marker but could not get to the finish line (42.16K, or 26.2 miles) because of the bombings. Rene was in this group.

  • 1,246 did not get to the 40K marker for various reasons: some dropped out, others got stopped as a result of the bombings before they reached this marker.

Rene passed the 40K marker at 3:13 p.m., and had already ran 4 hours, 31 minutes and 22 seconds at that moment. (See stats for bib# 21852 at www.baa.org/individual.html.) The bombs went off at 3:14 p.m. when Headley was 2.16K (1.3 miles) away from the finish line. When she was stopped by the National Guard with M4's, she had ran 4 hours, 41 minutes and was 1.13K (7/10 of a mile) away from finishing.

Headley is currently activated in the Army Reserves and stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. The charity Headley was running for is The Michael Lisnow Respite Center in Hopkinton, Mass. The mission of the center is to create a home away from home for children and adults with disabilities. For more information on the center see: www.razoo.com/team/Michaelsmiracle2013.
