The University of Alaska Fairbanks Rasmuson Library will host “Frozen Dreams and Delusions: 400 Years of Arctic Cartography,” the 31st International Map Collectors’ Society symposium. The event will be held Sept. 9 and 10 and is open to the public. Registration is required.

The symposium brings together map collectors from all over the globe and will feature presentations by experts from Fairbanks, Juneau and Outside. On Monday, Sept. 9, Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell will be the keynote speaker, presenting “Mapping the Arctic in a Changing World.” Speakers will also present lectures on the maps of Captain Cook; looking into the future of map preservation and collection; Bradford Washburn’s maps of Everest and Denali; and Alaska Native maps of the night sky, among others.

Registrants will get a behind-the-scenes look at rare maps from the Rasmuson Library's Alaska and Polar Regions Collections and Archives, including some that date from the 17th century.
