UAF plastic recycling program halted

UAF is no longer accepting plastic for recycling. K&K Recycling, the company to which UAF took its plastic for processing, has stopped accepting the material. The company has stated that it cannot handle the volume produced in the Fairbanks area.

UAF hopes to explore other options for plastic recycling locally.

Until then, another option for recycling plastic at home exists. The Fairbanks Rescue Mission, 723 27th Avenue, has a limited plastic recycling program and can accept No. 1 and No. 2 plastics that have been cleaned. These plastics include soda and water bottles, milk jugs, some juice containers and laundry detergent bottles. Please check the container numbers before delivering them to the mission.

UAF can still accept aluminum, glass, cardboard, paper and tin. Plastic-only bins are being removed from campus; please do not place your plastics in other recycling bins.

Plastic bins that are part of all-in-one units (such as those in the Moore-Bartlett-Skarland residence hall complex) will remain, and the contents are being weighed for tracking only.

The all-in-one bin units are labeled with signage explaining the situation and what will happen to items placed inside the plastics container. Please notify the UAF Office of Sustainability of any unlabeled all-in-one bins.
