April 7, 2017

University Relations

A kickoff meeting for the UAF Community Garden's 2017 season will be held from 6-8 p.m. Monday, April 17, in Schaible Auditorium.

The meeting will have two parts:

  • 6-6:30 p.m. — Julie Riley of the UAF Cooperative Extension Service will talk about organic soil amendments.

  • 6:30-8 p.m. — Organizers will discuss the garden's upcoming work days, etiquette and rules; collect payment for plots; and assign plots. Paying for your plot at the meeting is highly recommended.

Growers and gardeners also will be able to swap seeds. Please consider the following tips:

  • Bring your seeds in containers that can be opened so people can take what they want.

  • Bring small containers (envelopes, pill bottles, etc.) to take seeds away in.

  • Provide as much information as possible about your seeds: species, variety, conditions in which the plants grew, strengths and sensitivities, maturation time, sprouting time, etc.

  • Take only the seeds you intend to plant.

Following these activities, a raffle will award bags of organic compost generated in the community garden.
