UAF to close Dec. 29-31

November 11, 2014

University Relations

The university will close Dec. 29, 30 and 31, 2014, during the winter break. This "hard" closure will fall between the paid holidays, Dec. 25-26 and Jan. 1-2.

During the hard closure, employees can claim annual leave or leave without pay on their time sheets.  They may take sick leave if appropriate documentation is presented to supervisors.

There will be no soft closure this year; however, employees are encouraged to take leave during the winter break if approved in advance by their supervisors, according to a Nov. 10 memo from Brad Lobland, UAF human resources director, to deans and directors.

Employees should be aware that retirement eligibility (PERS and TRS) may be affected if leave without pay exceeds 10 days in a calendar year.

Once a supervisor has announced a department’s winter break business hours, employees should coordinate with that supervisor regarding leave options and schedules.

Departments that require employees to work during the hard holiday closure (Dec. 29–31) should notify UAF Human Resources in writing before Dec. 17.
