The University of Alaska Press announces the release of two new titles in the Alaska Literary Series: "River of Light" by John Morgan, images by Kesler Woodward, and "Sailing by Ravens" by Holly J. Hughes.

"River of Light: A Conversation with Kabir"
A book-length poem, "River of Light" takes the reader on a weeklong raft trip down a wild river in Southcentral Alaska. This adventure becomes a spiritual journey as well, since the poem incorporates commentary by the 15th-century Indian mystic poet Kabir, who serves as a kind of mentor for the poem’s narrator.

"Sailing by Ravens"
Gillnetter, mariner and naturalist Holly Hughes has experienced first-hand the practical and philosophical consequences of navigating difficult waters. In "Sailing by Ravens," she gathers wisdom gained from 30 seasons working off Alaska’s shores, weaving personal experience and her love of the sea with the history and science of navigation. In this exquisite collection of poems, Hughes deftly navigates “the wavering, certain path” of a woman’s heart, finding that sometimes the best directions to follow are those that come from the natural forces in our lives. These meditations offer waypoints for readers on their own journeys. Book website: hollyjhughes.com.
