A 30-minute tour of campus on April 1 will celebrate National Walking Day. The walk, sponsored by the American Heart Association, will begin at noon in front of the campus fire station.

The event precedes the association's 2015 Heart Walk on May 16, which is chaired by Chancellor Brian Rogers and Sherry Modrow.

Many adults become less active as they spend more time at work, which increases the risk of heart disease. The association encourages Americans to start fixing the problem by lacing up their sneakers and walking  for at least 30 minutes on National Walking Day. It's a great way to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and to get family, friends and co-workers started on a healthier way of life.

Statistics show people stick to walking plans more than any other form of physical activity. Walking is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers.

The association recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of exercise per week and that kids get 60 minutes per day. Physical activity can relieve depression, improve memory and lower blood pressure.
