The use of the term "academic freedom"

I have heard the term "academic freedom" used by faculty in a similar fashion to "because I said so", in a more diverse society with more diverse opinions, I think it would come off better if faculty members use the term followed by an explanation as to why their specific actions, methods, or rules in class add to the academic quality of the students they are teaching rather than just using it in a deragatory fashion.
