Auditions scheduled for 'Tartuffe,' next Theatre UAF production

The UAF Department of Theatre and Film will hold early auditions for their spring 2014 mainstage production, Molière's classic French play "Tartuffe," Saturday, Dec. 7.
"Tartuffe" will replace Sarah Ruhl's "Dead Man's Cell Phone," originally scheduled for this time and venue.
Set in 17th-century Paris, this comedy takes place in the home of the wealthy Monsieur Orgon, where Tartuffe — a fraud whom Orgon believes to be a paragon of virtue — has insinuated himself. Tartuffe succeeds in winning the respect and devotion of Orgon before attempting to marry his daughter, seduce his wife and scrounge the deed to the property. The story examines the dangers that imperil people who blindly stand by their beliefs despite a mountain of evidence to the contrary.
A timeless play, this saucy, witty comedy offers laughs and visual splendor for audiences, as well as intensive stagecraft, costuming and acting challenges for students and community members. Three of the characters — Tartuffe, Elmire, and Valère — are considered to be among the greatest of classical theatre roles.
Auditions for "Tartuffe" are open to the public and will be held Saturday, Dec. 7, beginning at 1 p.m. in the Salisbury Theatre in the Fine Arts complex on the UAF campus. Rehearsals will begin Jan. 21, 2014, with performances scheduled from Mar. 28 - Apr. 6, 2014.
