Stacy Rasmus has been appointed interim director of the Center for Alaska Native Health and Research at the Institute of Arctic Biology, effective Jan. 1.

Rasmus received her Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2008, and is an associate research professor at IAB and the College of Rural and Community Development. She is trained in social and behavioral sciences, with specific expertise in the translation of Indigenous knowledge and practice into community-driven, culturally centered health interventions. She leads several federal grants that focus on increasing strength and resilience, and reducing risk for substance-use disorders and suicide in American Indian and Alaska Native communities.

Her most recent award, through the National Institute of Mental Health, will establish the Alaska Native Collaborative Hub for Resilience Research as a centralized resource for developing statewide partnerships, and disseminating strategies and successes in suicide prevention.
