SMART Academy course on civil discourse

In response to the recent events in Washington, D.C., a virtual Civility in a Divided Society course will be offered for high school students. The class is part of the 365 SMART Academy from UAF's Summer Sessions and Lifelong Learning.

graphic image of brightly colored human figures grouped togetherThe four-week course begins Feb. 1 and consists of weekly Zoom sessions, YouTube videos, and kits for hands-on activities. It will provide the tools and techniques to challenge students to become a more empathetic and engaged citizen. It features lessons on civility in everyday life, understanding the role of media in society, identifying fake news and learning to combat the spread of misinformation, while practicing what it means to deliberate versus debate.

The cost of the course has been lowered from $195 to $25. To register your child or for more information, call 474-7021 or email summer@alaska.edu.
