Shipping or taking research equipment out of the country?

If you are shipping or taking research equipment out of the country, you need to be aware of U.S. export control regulations. Regardless of whether it's for permanent or temporary export, some research equipment is subject to export controls, and you may need a license for the export. Unlicensed exports can result in confiscation of the equipment when crossing the border, and potential fines and penalties on the university can be severe.

Most low-tech, commercially available items (standard laptop, cell phone, sample vials or containers) will not need an export license unless you are traveling to a sanctioned or embargoed country. For more information on how export controls may apply to your activities, please visit www.uaf.edu/ori/export-controls/international-travel/ or contact the Office of Research Integrity at 474-7832 or email bjwatson@alaska.edu.
