William Schnabel will direct the Institute of Northern Engineering at the University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Engineering and Mines.

Doug Goering, dean of the college, appointed Schnabel.

“Bill’s long association with the college as a highly regarded faculty member and as a researcher, coupled with his passion for enhancing research efforts at CEM and collaborating with a diverse faculty roster and industry leaders, make him the ideal person for this important role”, Goering said.

Schnabel replaces Dan White, the former INE director who became vice president for academic affairs and research at the UA statewide offices in March 2015. Schnabel has served as INE interim director since then.

Schnabel holds a doctorate from UAF in environmental systems engineering (2000), a master's degree in environmental engineering from the University of Iowa (1996) and a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Purdue University (1991). He has conducted research at INE's Water and Environmental Research Center, where he will continue as director.

Schnabel has also worked in the private sector, dealing with environmental planning, investigation, remediation and cold-region engineering applications.
