Poker Flat Research Range, located at Mile 30 on the Steese Highway north of Fairbanks, will be open to the public on Thursday, July 17, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Geophysical Institute and range personnel will be available for tours of the launching facilities and will give science demonstrations. Guests will learn about the exciting history of rocket research in Alaska. Admission is free, and community members of all ages are invited to attend.

Since opening in 1969, many sounding rockets have been launched at the range. Poker Flat is the world’s only university-owned rocket range.

The third annual “Rockets and Gold” event is being held in conjunction with the 2014 Fairbanks Golden Days celebration. The range is located in the heart of the Chatanika gold-mining district.
