The No. 4 Alaska Nanooks beat the No. 2 Texas Christian Horned Frogs for the team title in smallbore but ultimately lost their first home match of the New Year 4670-4654 on Saturday evening at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range.

Both teams combined for team smallbore scores of 2309, but Alaska won the tie-breaker with 118 center shots to the Frogs' 112. In air gun TCU beat the Nanooks by 16 points, 2361-2345.

"That's the second top-ranked team we've held right with in smallbore," Alaska head coach Dan Jordan said. "In air gun we're definitely still behind where we need to be, so that's going to be our big emphasis over the next month."

The Nanooks were led by walk-on freshman Lorelie Stanfield (Fairbanks, Alaska/Emergency Management) who was third overall with her personal best 579, although she was not on the starting squad. TCU's Sarah Scherer shot the top smallbore score on the day with a 589, while her teammate Sarah Beard was second with a 586.

Junior Michael Liuzza (New Orleans, La./Business Administration) and sophomore Mats Eriksson (Malung, Sweden/Business Management) tied for second-best (4th-5th overall) with 578 apiece.

Freshman Tim Sherry (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mechanical Engineering) fired a 577, sophomore Ryan Anderson (Great Falls, Va./Biology) had 576 and senior Cole Bures (Odell, Neb./Electrical Engineering) rounded out the scoring team with 574.

Junior Dustin Cheseboro (Laramie, Wy./Engineering) led the Blue and Gold in air rifle with a 592, while Eriksson was second with a 586, followed by Anderson's 584, Sherry's 583 and Liuzza's 580.

The Nanooks and Horned Frogs will rematch on Monday, Jan. 21 at 9 a.m. at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range.
