Alaska set one new pool record, won both relays and six individual events as it was able to notch its first victory in program history against California Baptist, 113-92, in the season opener on Friday night at the Patty Center Pool.

"It feels great," head coach Scott Lemley said. "It took eight years but they're a really good team. It was nice to see us step up to the competition."

The tandem of senior Meghan O'Leary, sophomore Margot Adams and Gabi Summers and junior Bente Heller completed the longest relay in NCAA with a time of seven minutes, 56.85 seconds, breaking the previous pool record of 8:10.71, set back on Nov. 6, 2010, by Grand Canyon.

Alaska also opened the meet by winning the 400 medley relay with the team of O'Leary, freshman Eileen Audette, Adams and Heller after hitting the wall in 4:05.47.

Individually, sophomore Danielle Lyons led the Nanooks with three victories while Summers, Heller and Adams each had one solo win. Alaska also had two runner-ups and two third-place finishes that aided the team win.

" was a big factor," Lemley said. "They all played a role for us. It bodes well."

Lyons first triumphed in the 200 individual medley after turning in a time of 2:12.18. Two events later, she was back in the pool to claim the 100 freestyle in 54.92 seconds. After taking off the following event, she wrapped up her evening by taking the 500 free with a time of 5:20.42.

Summers won the 200 free comfortably by over six seconds with a time of 1:58.45. Heller and Adams both just missed out on breaking their own pool records as Heller won the 50 free in 24.39 seconds while Adams cruised to victory in the 100 butterfly after touching the wall with an NCAA 'B-cut' time of 56.64 seconds.

Summers also took second in the 100 backstroke (1:02.43) while Audette was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.58). Sophomore Kendra Ashwell was third in the 200 free (2:05.64) and sophomore Genevieve Johnson took the same place in the 200 IM (2:21.32).

The Lancers, who only led briefly after the second race of the night, won three individual events while placing runner-up in seven of the nine solo events and both relays. Pacing the CBU swimmers were Molly Larson and Kyndall Terwilliger.

Larson won both the 100 back (1:02.20) and the 100 breast (1:09.50) and was part of the second-place 400 medley relay squad (4:10.11). Terwilliger claimed victory in the 1000 free (10:55.44) as Cal Baptist took the top three spots in that event and she was also third in the 100 fly (1:02.25) and 500 free (5:27.45) Hazel Castillo also took runner-up in all three events she participated in as well.

Alaska meets Cal Baptist again Saturday with another 11-event dual meet at noon (AKDT) at the Patty Center Pool. Live video is available and admission is free for all spectators.
