The results of two months of work by the UAF Planning and Budget Committee are now available for review.

UAF is projecting a $12 million to $14 million budget shortfall for FY15. The shortfall is the result of increased costs and reduced funding, including a legislative general fund reduction of about $8 million. In February, Chancellor Rogers charged the Planning and Budget Committee, which included representation from across campus, with recommending ways the university could reduce expenditures to address the shortfall.

Their findings fall into three categories: generally recommended, recommended with reservations and not recommended. Chancellor’s Cabinet will now review the committee’s findings and will use them to make budget reduction recommendations to the chancellor, who makes the final decision on budget cuts. Cabinet is also accepting input from the campus community and public on the proposed reductions through Wednesday, June 11.

Once the targeted cuts are identified, the remainder of the shortfall in FY15 will be covered with some form of across-the-board reductions. The chancellor will make final decisions regarding targeted cuts and an approach to across-the board reductions in late June. Vice chancellors will be responsible for managing those cuts in their units.

Because it is likely that public funding for the university will continue to be constrained for the next several years, the next fiscal year will also include multiple reviews of campus functions and programs, with an eye on efficiency and financial savings. Those efforts will also include opportunities for input from the campus community and public.
