The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service will offer certification and recertification training for pesticide applicators April 3 – 4 in Delta Junction and in five other communities by videoconference.

The class will be held at the Delta Career Advancement Center and at videoconference sites in Fairbanks, Anchorage, Soldotna, Kodiak and Homer. The class, taught by Extension pesticide program coordinator Phil Kaspari, will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 4.

Pesticide applications certification is required for individuals who apply pesticides to someone else’s property or to a public place. Certification is also required for individuals who consult or advise about pesticides or purchase, use or sell restricted-use pesticides.

The class will focus on core training for individuals seeking initial certification or recertification in any of the 14 Environmental Protection Agency categories of pesticide use.

The deadline for registration is Friday, March 30. Cost is $30 for either initial certification or recertification. Visit www.uaf.edu/ces/ah/psep/training to register online or download a registration.

Participants who do not have training materials will need to pick them up in advance. A new core exam and supplemental exams have proven challenging, so students are encouraged to study on their own beforehand. Study materials can be downloaded at the Department of Environmental Conservation website, http://dec.alaska.gov/eh/pest/index.htm, or ordered through Extension offices.

Videoconferencing sites are located in Extension district offices in Fairbanks and Anchorage. For the location in Soldotna and Homer, contact Janice Chumley at 262-5824; and for Kodiak, Blythe Brown at 486-5574. For more information or to obtain study materials, contact your local district office or Christy Roden at 895-4215 or cmroden@alaska.edu.
