Renowned physician, clown and social activist Dr. Patch Adams will give a free public lecture in Fairbanks Wednesday, Oct. 6. Seating for the event begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Davis Concert Hall on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus.

Adams is in Fairbanks as part of the National Association of Social Workers, Alaska Chapter and Alaska Counseling Association conference.

Adams mixes a holistic approach to medical care with his training as a clown, a technique he has used to great success and acclaim. His work was fictionalized in the film “Patch Adams,” which starred Robin Williams. He is a founder and director of the Gesundheit Institute, a holistic medical community in West Virginia that provides free medical care.

Adams’ lecture, “Humor and Health,” will focus on clowning and health and how the health of individuals, communities and societies are interconnected. The Inu-Yupiaq dancers will perform prior to his lecture and a book signing will immediately follow the lecture in the Great Hall.

Adams’ lecture and appearance in Fairbanks is sponsored by the National Association of Social Workers, the Alaska Counseling Association, the UAF social work department and the Organization of Student Social Workers.
