Newly admitted bachelor's and graduate degree students who enroll in three or more credits on the Fairbanks campus this fall must complete Haven and AlcoholEdu online training.

Haven and AlcoholEdu offer interactive, online courses that provide tools to help create a safe living and learning environment where all students are free to achieve their personal and academic goals in a safe, welcoming, supportive community.

The high costs of alcohol use and sexual violence cannot be ignored:

  • 50 percent of reported sexual assaults involve alcohol,

  • 14 percent of Alaskans abuse or are dependent on alcohol,

  • 37.9 percent of college students engage in binge drinking, and one-quarter of college students report negative academic consequences as a result of their alcohol use.

Research shows that first-year college students are at the highest statistical risk to fall victim to sexual violence or make unsafe choices regarding alcohol in the first six weeks of their first semester in college.

For students to get the most out of this great training, they should:

  • Complete part 1 of Haven and AlcoholEdu prior to Aug. 25.

  • Complete part 2  by Oct. 31 to avoid a $150 fee.

Any potential revenue from this fee will be used for sexual violence prevention and alcohol education programs.

The Office of Admissions and the Registrar has developed a comprehensive plan to communicate with incoming students about this training requirement. Any student wishing to appeal the fee can do so through the Dean of Students Office.

Haven and AlcoholEdu ask students to disclose information regarding their drinking habits and experiences with sexual violence.

  • Information that is collected is anonymous.

  • Information is not tied back to a specific student.

  • Information will inform prevention efforts and resource allocation.

Haven and AlcoholEdu are industry leaders in providing quality, research-based information to college students nationwide regarding healthy relationships and the potential negative consequences of alcohol use. Each year, more than 500,000 college students across the country complete Haven and AlcoholEdu. AlcoholEdu and Haven have been proven to be effective. Eight independent studies have verified the efficacy of AlcoholEdu and Haven has been shown to reduce students’ misperceptions of norms regarding bystander intervention by 20-30 percent.
