November is Native American Heritage Month

In 1990 Congress and the president approved a resolution designating November as National American Indian Heritage Month. Similar proclamations have been issued each year since 1994. UAF observes Native American Heritage Month by sponsoring and hosting a number of events.


  • Nov. 4 – 8: Alaska Native Art Show in the UAF Fine Arts Building. For more information call Da-ka-xeen Mehner at 474-6972.

  • Nov. 5: Native American Month community “kick-off” potluck at Effie Kokrine Charter School gym, 4 – 6 p.m. Bring a dish to share, there will be dancing and a traditional Native clothing show.

  • Nov. 9 – 12: 29th Annual Athabascan Fiddler’s Festival at the David Salmon Tribal Hall. For more information look for The Athabaskan Fiddler’s Association on facebook.

  • Nov. 12: Elder’s Tea, noon at Effie Kokrine school, sponsored by Alaska Native Education. For more information call 452-2000 x 468.

  • Nov. 14: Comedy brown bag lunch at Interior-Aleutians Campus Harper Building, 4280 Geist Rd. For more information call 474-5439.

  • Nov. 15 – 16: Tanana Chiefs Conference Education Summit, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. at David Salmon Tribal Hall. For more information call Reva Shircel or Nellie Shaeffer at 452-8251.

  • Nov. 17: Alaska Native Education Community Potluck, 6 – 8 p.m. at Hunter Elementary, bring a dish to share. For more information call 452-2000 x 468.

  • Nov. 19: Family to Family – Celebrate Adoption and Foster Care

  • Nov. 21: Film Viewing, brown bag lunch at IAC Harper Building

  • Nov. 25 – 26: Effie Kokrine School, Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament
