Nominations sought for Kessel Medal for Excellence

Nominations for the Brina Kessel Medal for Excellence in Science are due Thursday, March 27. The medal is presented annually to an outstanding senior in natural sciences at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Kessel was a UAF professor for more than 40 years and devoted a lifetime to the study of ornithology, emphasizing the birds of arctic and subarctic Alaska. 

The medal comes with a $500 prize.

Nominees must be seniors majoring in a natural science and possess:

  • at least a 3.5 GPA in combined course work in the basic sciences, mathematics and statistics. 

  • a record of interest or participation in research, particularly self-initiated.

  • integrity, creativity and analytical thinking abilities.

  • commitment to their fields and potential to succeed in them.


Nomination letters must include an assessment of how the nominees meet these criteria as well as the names of two secondary references.
