No. 5 rifle ends regular season with 4652-4622 win over No. 12 Nevada

The fifth-ranked Alaska rifle team concluded its regular season with a convincing 4652-4622 victory against No. 12 Nevada on Thursday at the UTEP Rifle Range.

The Nanooks shot 2310 in smallbore and 2342 in air rifle while the WolfPack registered scores of 2290 in smallbore and 2332 in air rifle.

Freshman Soren Butler (Casselton, N.D./General studies) led the team in smallbore with a match- and season-high score of 582 while sophomore Ryan Anderson (Great Falls, Va./Biology) had a team-best score of 588 in air rifle while adding a 577 in smallbore.

In the smallbore portion of the match, aside from Butler's 582 and Anderson's 577, Alaska also had squad scores of 579 from junior Mike Liuzza (New Orleans, La./Business administration), 572 from senior Cole Bures (Odell, Neb./Electrical engineering) and a 570 by sophomore Mats Eriksson (Malung, Sweden/Business management).

The Nanooks also had air rifle squad scores of 585 by both Liuzza and Eriksson, 584 by junior Dustin Chesebro (Laramie, Wyo./Engineering) and 569 by Bures.

For Nevada, Olivia Pennell produced a team-high 577 in smallbore and was second on her team in air rifle with a 582 while Haunani Akana was the top shooter in air rifle with a match-high 590.

The Nanooks now turn their attention to the NCAA qualifier, which will take place this Saturday and Sunday at UTEP. On Saturday, they will shoot smallbore, followed up by air rifle on Sunday.
