The American Volleyball Coaches Association has named the Alaska Nanooks volleyball team a recipient of the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2018-2019 season. It is the first time since 2012 that the Nooks have earned the AVCA Team Academic Award.

The Nanooks were one of 141 NCAA Division II teams recognized for academic excellence by the AVCA, with 1,125 teams being acknowledged overall.

The award is given to teams that maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

“I think awards like this are a real tribute to the team and the effort and hard work they put in to being a great student-athlete here at UAF,” head volleyball coach Brian Scott said. “It takes a lot of discipline to be successful in school, while meeting the training and traveling demands of a student-athlete, even more so in Alaska with the very intense travel schedule. I’m proud of this group for their efforts in the classroom and on the court this past season.”

Of the 11 Great Northwest Athletic Conference schools, Alaska is one of eight volleyball teams to earn the AVCA Team Academic Award with Central Washington, Concordia, Montana State Billings, Northwest Nazarene, Saint Martin’s, Seattle Pacific, Western Oregon and Western Washington.

The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team start the season Friday, Aug. 23 with the annual Blue vs. Gold intra-squad scrimmage, followed by the annual alumni game on Saturday, Aug. 31. The 2019 campaign will officially be underway Friday, Sept. 6, as the Nooks take on the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Wildcats at the Colorado School of Mines Classic in Golden, Colorado.
