The Alaska Nanooks dropped their second straight home match to the No. 2 Texas Christian Horned Frogs as they were defeated 4692-4657 on Monday at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range.
After beating TCU with a tie-breaker in smallbore on Saturday, the Nanooks were unable to keep things as close in either gun. The Horned Frogs ousted them 2323 to 2311 in smallbore and 2346 to 2369 in air rifle.
"We have a lot of depth on the team, it's just that everyone is shooting mediocre scores," said head coach Dan Jordan. "We aren't far off from being competitive at all."
TCU's Sarah Beard and Sarah Scherer shot the top two smallbore scores on the day with a 591 and 585, respectively. Alaska sophomore Ryan Anderson (Great Falls, Va./Biology) led the Blue and Gold and was third overall with a 582.
Junior Michael Liuzza (New Orleans, La./Business Administration) was second for the Nanooks with a 579, while senior Cole Bures (Odell, Neb./Electrical Engineering) was third (576), freshman Tim Sherry (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mechanical Engineering) was fourth (574) and sophomore Mats Eriksson (Malung, Sweden/Business Management) rounded out the scoring team (569).
In air rifle the Horned Frogs' Scherer was three-points shy of a perfect score (597) and Beard was right behind her with a 596. TCU's Catherine Green was the only other shooter to break into the 590s with a 592. Eriksson led the Nanooks with a 588, while Bures had a 587, Anderson a 586, junior Dustin Chesebro (Laramie, Wy./Engineering) a 585 and Sherry a 581.
"Two or three points in each gun is completely doable and that would put us right there with the top three teams," Jordan said. "We have the time if they have the drive."
Alaska has a few weeks to train before they head back to the Lower 48 for their NCAA Qualifier, Feb. 16-17 at Texas El Paso.
