Multiple marine fellowships available

Multiple fellowships in marine science and policy are available during the coming year for graduate and postgraduate students, according to Alaska Sea Grant.


Application deadlines and start dates vary. Below are summaries of several upcoming fellowship opportunities.

  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Coastal Management Fellowship — This two-year fellowship provides on-the-job education and training in coastal resource management and policy for postgraduate students. Fellows assist state coastal zone management programs. The fellowships come with a salary, medical benefits and relocation expenses. Applications are due Jan. 20 and the fellowships begin in August 2017. For more information, visit the NOAA Coastal Management Fellowship webpage.

  • NOAA Fisheries-National Sea Grant Fellowship — This fellowship is for doctoral students interested in living marine resources, whether modeling and managing their populations or studying the economics of their conservation. Recipients work with a mentor from NOAA Fisheries.   • John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship — This fellowship is for graduate students with an interest in ocean, coastal or Great Lakes resources and in national policy decisions affecting them. The fellowship provides a year of paid experience working in congressional or executive branch offices in Washington, D.C.   • Alaska Sea Grant State Policy Fellowship — This paid 12-month fellowship for graduate students offers on-the-job experience in state or federal agencies in Alaska, working on marine resources and policy decision-making. Graduate students close to completing a degree, or with a recently earned degree, are eligible. The application deadline is Feb. 24, 2017, for fellowships that begin in July 2017.
