University Relations

A gathering in honor of Jerah Chadwick will be held Sunday, July 30, at 7 p.m. at the Georgeson Garden pavilion. Chadwick, who died June 7, 2016, in San Antonio, Texas, was named a UAF professor emeritus of general and developmental studies in 2009. He was also the 2004-2006 Alaska state writer laureate. He was an innovative administrator at the university's Aleutian and Pribilof Island Center in Dutch Harbor, where he expanded the university’s off-campus offerings in the rural area he served.

Chadwick was regarded as an inspiring and caring teacher whose infectious enthusiasm inspired his students. In addition to his university work, he helped organize a culture camp to teach lost Unangan bentwood hat construction techniques to young people of the Aleutians. He assisted elder Andrew Gronholdt in helping students learn to make the famous artistic long-billed hats.
