January 25, 2012

The application deadline for the 2012 Girls on Ice program is March 15. The program, founded by Geophysical Institute Assistant Professor Erin Pettit, includes two expeditions this year. The original North Cascades expedition on Mount Baker in Washington State will be July 29 – August 9, and a new Alaska-based expedition will take place July 15 – 25.

Girls on Ice is a unique, free, wilderness science education program for high school girls. Each year a team of nine teenage girls and three instructors explore and learn about mountain glaciers and alpine landscapes through scientific field studies with professional glaciologists and mountaineers.

Applicants must be at least 15 years old by July 15, 2012, and no older than 18 on Aug. 9, 2012. The application process requires answering a series of short essay questions and two teacher recommendations. The Alaska expedition is primarily intended for Alaskan and Pacific Northwest girls.
