Longtime Poker Flat Research Range employee Sam Burger died Saturday morning, Feb. 15, after a battle with cancer. He was surrounded by family at home when he died.

Burger worked at Poker Flat for nine years, starting as a temporary heater watcher and rising to facilities supervisor. His coworkers said he had a wide breadth of knowledge that he used generously in his work. He leaves a large void.

A celebration of life gathering is set for Sunday, March 2, at the Chatanika Lodge. A time has not been set yet.

He leaves behind his wife, Theresa Bauer Burger, four sons, grandchildren and his parents. Cards and messages may be sent to Sam’s family in care of Kathe Rich or Cheryl Berrong at Poker Flat, and they will make sure his family gets them.

A sympathy card will available to sign in the Geophysical Institute director’s office as well.
