Lecture to offer stress-reduction techniques

Summer Sessions at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in cooperation with the UAF School or Education, will host a free public lecture with University of San Francisco psychologist and sociologist Brian Gerrard Wednesday, June 6 at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium. The lecture, “Six Stress Reduction Techniques that Really Work,” will also be available as a live webcast at http://www.alaska.edu/oit/services/video-conferencing/streaming-conferences/.

Gerrard is an associate professor in the Counseling Psychology Department and is executive director of USF’s Center for Child and Family Development. His areas of research have included marital and family therapy, school-based family counseling, cognitive-behavioral therapy, research methods, grief counseling and health psychology.

This lecture will describe six effective approaches to stress reduction including thought-stopping, diaphragmatic breathing, progressive relaxation, chanting, cognitive disputation and assertion.
