High school and college students can learn more about science- and math-related careers or study at the Careers of Science and Math Opportunity Summit at the University of Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday, Feb. 2.

The UAF College of Natural Science and Mathematics will host COSMOS from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Murie Building, 2090 Koyukuk Drive, on the Fairbanks campus. The summit is free but preregistration is required.

Students will participate in discussions, networking and hands-on activities with professionals and faculty members from different businesses, agencies, and UAF colleges and schools. The event will include information on a wide range of fields, including mathematics, physics, biomedical research, engineering, chemistry, geosciences, wildlife biology, science education, natural resources management and fisheries.

Carolyn Chapin, the CNSM undergraduate academic advisor who is organizing the event, said the summit allows high school and college students to explore educational, career and networking opportunities.

“It's education, it's career, it's potential job connections and it's meet-and-greet networking," Chapin said. “It’s a chance to speak with those employed by the various industries.”

She said the goal of the summit is to give students practical information about careers, salaries, education requirements, work availability and job duties, as well as an understanding of the diverse opportunities offered by science, technology, engineering and math careers. The summit is configured so students can spend as much or as little time as they wish.
