KUAC tops Fairbanks-area radio ratings

KUAC FM is Fairbanks’ top-ranked radio station in all major categories, according to the most recent Eastlan ratings. Categories include total weekly cumulative listeners, length of time spent listening, listener turnover and average quarter hour listeners, which is regarded as the best indicator of listenership.
“These ratings are phenomenal and prove what we’ve known anecdotally for years – that more people listen to KUAC, they listen longer and they turn to other radio stations less frequently,” said KUAC general manager Keith Martin.
Programming and operations director Jerry Evans also noted the importance of the station’s community support, from listeners and volunteers to staff members and other supporters. “It’s not surprising to us, but it is especially gratifying because KUAC is the only station in the top eight that’s locally owned and operated.”
According to spring 2010 Easlan ratings, KUAC has 3,013 average quarter hour listeners, far outdistancing the No. 2 station, with 2,105, and the No. 3 station, with 1,670. Average quarter hour is defined as the average number of people listening to a particular station for at least five consecutive minutes during a 15-minute period. It is considered to be the number of listeners at any given time.
KUAC also has the highest total weekly cumulative audience. In an average week, 22,385 people listen to KUAC, and each of those 22,385 people listen for an average of 17 hours per week, also a top rating in the area. KUAC also has the lowest turnover rate, meaning KUAC listeners tune in and stay tuned in.
Out of all of the hours of programming on all of the radio stations in the Interior, KUAC has the five most listened-to hours: weekday shows “Morning Edition,” from 6-8 a.m.; “Here & Now,” from 8-9 a.m.; and “Performance Today” from 9-10 a.m.; as well as Saturday’s “Car Talk,” from 9-10 a.m. In addition to the top five, KUAC has 15 of the top 19 hours.
KUAC 89.9 FM is set to celebrate its 50th year of broadcasting in October 2012. Based at the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus, KUAC was the first public radio and television station in Alaska and Fairbanks’ first FM station. KUAC was also Alaska’s first public broadcaster to begin broadcasting in HD.
Eastlan is a private media research firm that provides audience measurement data to more than 450 subscribing radio stations in more than 90 U.S. markets. For the most current ratings, Eastlan surveyed 600 people, which would reflect a population of nearly 80,000 people. The ratings represent listeners 12 years old and older in the Fairbanks North Star Borough and surrounding areas and time frames from 6 a.m. through midnight, 7 days a week.
