KUAC’s annual television spring fundraiser kicks off Saturday, March 3 with a poster-signing event with Fairbanks artist Ken Whitten, whose photo,“Berry Toss,” is featured on KUAC’s 29th annual poster. The poster is a thank-you gift for donors who support the mission of KUAC public television.

Whitten will sign posters at a reception from noon to 4 p.m. at Well Street Art Company at 1304 Well Street, off Phillips Field Road in Fairbanks.

Whitten captured the photograph of a Bohemian Waxwing eating fruit about a year ago, after a friend invited him to photograph birds in his yard. Whitten, who worked as a wildlife biologist for more than three decades, observed the active creatures until he found a way to capture their activities.

“The trick, I found, was to find a branch covered in fruit, with a clean background, and just wait for a bird to land,” he said. “Of all the shots I took that day, this one stood out.”

It also stood out to KUAC’s panel of artist and art experts, who chose it from among nearly 70 pieces submitted by 26 Alaska artists during an open call for art. This year’s selection committee members were: Mary Ann Borchert, Yolanda Fejes, Aldona Jonaitis, Dixon Jones, Sue Sprinkle, Jinx Whitaker and Sue Steinacher.

KUAC TV’s annual television spring fundraiser runs March 3-18, 2012. Pledges to KUAC TV’s AlaskaOne television can be made at the poster-signing event, as well as online at www.alaskaone.org or by calling 907-474-7491.
