The Juneau-Douglas Caballers won first place at this year's Tsunami Bowl after beating some familiar opponents in the championship match -- their classmates on the Juneau-Douglas Third Whale team.

Eighteen teams of high school students traveled to Seward, Alaska, to test their ocean sciences knowledge in the 2014 Alaska Region National Ocean Sciences Bowl, dubbed the Tsunami Bowl. The competition, held Feb. 28-March 2, included a research paper, an oral research presentation and several rounds of quiz bowl matches.

As overall winners, the Caballers received tuition waivers for the University of Alaska Southeast and will have their travel expenses paid to represent Alaska in the national final competition in Seattle May 1-4. The Third Whale won second place.

Third place went to the Elusive Jellyfish team from Kodiak, who scored highest in the research project portion of the event. The top spot in research earned the Kodiak teacher $500 worth of classroom supplies sponsored by the University of Alaska Fairbanks' Alaska Sea Grant.

Rounding out the rest of the top five were the Sea Masons from Petersburg in fourth place and Persnickety Protoperidinium from Homer taking fifth.

In addition to being the overall winners, the Caballers also came in first place in the quiz bowl portion, winning $500 worth of classroom supplies sponsored by the National Park Service. The Caballers also won the Mayor's Trophy for scoring the most points in a single round, 148 points in the first round.

The most-improved team award went to the Dillingham's Flamin' Krackens, who finished in sixth place this year and 18th last year. They received $500 worth of of classroom supplies from an anonymous Tsunami Bowl sponsor.

Jace and the Argonauts from Scammon Bay were honored with the sportsmanship award, determined by the quiz bowl officials judging each match.

Wasilla High School Tactile Cnidarians finished in last place this year, taking home the red lantern award and $1,000 worth of classroom supplies sponsored by the National Park Service.
