The first Inupiaq feature film featuring an all Inuit cast, On the Ice, was filmed entirely in Alaska. Shot in Barrow in 2010, the film was an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival in 2011 and won Best Narrative Film at the Woodstock Film Festival in 2011. The movie received many other awards in festivals worldwide.

The film is being released in selected theaters and will open in New York, Anchorage, and Fairbanks on Feb. 17. The film will show at Regal Goldstream Cinema in Fairbanks.

On Sunday, Feb. 19, the public is invited to attend the 4 p.m. showing of the film and meet the director, Andrew Okpeaha MacLean, and producer, Cara Marcous, at the screening. A question and answer session will be held after the screening.

A public reception will be held for the filmmakers at Miguel’s Authentic Mexican Cuisine (1235 Airport Way; next to Shopper’s Forum Mall and Bamboo Panda).  The reception is hosted by Film UAF, the new film degree program, and the College of Liberal Arts Collaborative Arts Council. MacLean and Marcous will meet with UAF students on Monday, Feb. 20 to discuss filmmaking and translating Alaska to the big screen.
