Impact of ANCSA lecture series

A series of public lectures and presentations to commemorate 40 years since the 1971 passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act will take place on campus this summer and fall. The series will be coordinated by the Department of Alaska Native Studies and Rural Development and sponsored by the Chancellor’s office.


  • The Children of ANCSA: A discussion with Willie and Elizabeth Hensley, will be 7 p.m., Thursday, July 7, in Schaible Auditorium. This session will be hosted by the Rural Alaska Honors Institute. Willie Hensley and his daughter Elizabeth will discuss the history of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. This event will also be available as a webcast.

  • Byron Mallott, former CEO of the Sealaska Corp., will share his reflections on the impact of the settlement of the Alaska Native land claims on Alaska after forty years at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 13, in the Wood Center Carol Brown Ballroom.

  • Alaska Native leaders, former state and U.S. legislators, members of the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce, Chancellor Brian Rogers, Vice Chancellor Bernice Joseph and Miranda Wright, director of the Department of Alaska Native Studies and Rural Development, will convene for discussions on the impact of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act on Alaska’s economy, environment, social and cultural fabric. This two-day event will take place Wednesday – Thursday, Oct. 5  – 6 in the Wood Center Carol Brown Ballroom. A detailed schedule will be available prior to the event.
