Ice cream Thursdays gets pop star-themed makeover

#9 In honor of National Ice Cream Month, Student Activities Office staff have created a Beyonce’-themed  event. This week’s flavors will pay homage to Queen B’s lyrics — cotton candy, birthday cake and black cherry.

Daniel Nero, an English and secondary education major, heads up the event for the Student Activities Office. He said he and a few friends came up with the idea for the pop star theme. The ice cream will be served in the new pedestrian corridor in front of Wickersham Hall from noon–2 p.m.

Ice Cream Thursdays have been around since the 1970s at UAF and have been popular this year. Nero orders the ice cream and said there’s a lot of buzz about flavors with chunks of other foods in them, such as lemon meringue with bits of pie crust.

Chocolate brownie extreme, raspberry sherbet and death by chocolate are some of the best-selling flavors. They're a bargain at just $1 per scoop.

This is Nero's last summer scooping ice cream, since he'll be going on to his student teaching in the fall. "Treat yourself," he said when asked what his scooping experience had taught him. "You're going to have to treat yourself in order to do other things, and ice cream is one way to treat yourself."

The hardest part about doing that might be choosing just one flavor. If you miss this week, you'll find next week's flavors posted on SAO's Instagram or Facebook account. This summer event wraps up Aug. 11.
