International Arctic Research Center director Larry Hinzman was named vice president of the International Arctic Science Committee by its council during the Arctic Science Summit Week 2014 in Helsinki, Finland.

Out of 22 delegates from around the world, Hinzman was elected to be part of the five-member executive committee, consisting of a president and four vice presidents.

IASC, an interdisciplinary committee of the International Council for Science, is a nongovernmental scientific organization established to encourage international cooperation in arctic science. IASC encourages and facilitates basic and applied multi-disciplinary research connected with the circumpolar Arctic, and provides scientific advice on arctic issues.

ASSW, the annual gathering of the international organizations, is one such initiative. Hinzman has been spearheading the planning of ASSW 2016, which will be held in March 2016 on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus.
