University of Alaska Fairbanks Chancellor Brian Rogers announced Wednesday that Carol Gering, interim director of UAF eLearning and Distance Education, has been appointed to executive director.

“Over the years, distance education has grown from something delivered to remote students via the postal service to a robust program that serves students throughout our campus, state and nation using a broad range of traditional and technological methods, “ said Rogers. “Gering’s extensive experience within the division and her working knowledge of instructional methods and delivery make her the ideal choice to lead the program.”

Gering has been interim director since July 2012. Prior to that, she served in various capacities with the program since 1994, including associate director, design team manager, and adjunct faculty. Gering received her bachelor’s degree in Christian education from Southern Nazarene University in 1980 and her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from UAF in 2008.

Formerly known as the Center for Distance Education, UAF eLearning and Distance Education offers more than 180 courses in 43 disciplines. About 90 percent of the courses are offered online -- often called e-learning -- and a small selection are offered as print-based courses.
