An updated Geophysical Institute 50th Anniversary Celebration Project Jukebox is now available online. The project is part of the Oral History Program at the Elmer E. Rasmuson Library.

During the 50th anniversary celebration in May 2000, the Oral History Program recorded oral history interviews with eight former staff and faculty of the institute, as well as two storytelling sessions where a variety of speakers shared their memories of experiences at the Geophysical Institute during the early days. Some of the people who participated include former directors Syun-Ichi Akasofu and Roger Smith; professors Bill Stringer, Glenn Shaw, Sue Ann Bowling and Gunter Weller; and technical staff Larry Sweet, John Miller, Dan Osborne, Ned Manning and Mary Ann Borchert.

The interviews and stories contained in the Geophysical Institute’s Project Jukebox shed light on the scientific research, administration and people during the early days of the institute. It highlights its history, scientific accomplishments and legacy, and the importance of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as a pioneering scientific research institution.

The original Geophysical Institute 50th Anniversary Celebration Project Jukebox was created in 2000 in basic HTML. In 2020, staff modernized the look and navigability of the project by updating it into its current Drupal format.
