Freshman dorm policy

University Relations

The first-time freshmen dorm policy is intrinsically biased against Alaska Native students, since many stay with uncles, aunts and other family members, not parents or guardians as required for an exception. Culturally we say we want diversity, but we continue to not respect or understand other cultures. Can the exemption policy please be amended to reflect the cultural diversity of Alaska and what immediate family means for different people? The current policy allows an exception for "those who are living with immediate family or legal guardian within a 40-mile radius of campus."
