Director of Athletics Gary Gray announced the renewal of Flint Hills Resources as the title sponsor for the Alaska Nanook Classic volleyball tournament, which  will take place Sept. 6 and 7 at the Patty Center.

"We are very pleased that our good friends at Flint Hills Resources are continuing their title sponsorship of the Nanook Classic," Gray said. This important relationship allows us to continue offering this excellent NCAA Division II volleyball tournament. We very much appreciate the continued support of Flint Hills Resources and look forward to another outstanding event."

"FHR Alaska is proud to support many programs at UAF, including the women of the Alaska Nanooks volleyball team," Marisa Sharrah, Community Relations Manager at FHR Alaska, said. "This tournament is a fun way to kick off the academic and athletic year and we're looking forward to cheering 'Point 'Nooks!'"

The Nanook Classic, which is entering its 15th year of existence this season, will feature six matches over two days. Joining Alaska in the annual event are Colorado Christian out of Lakewood, Colo., Fresno Pacific out of Fresno, Calif., and Humboldt State out of Arcata, Calif. Last season, the Nanooks went 2-1 at the Classic that included a thrilling 3-2 victory against Findlay in the season opener.

Mallory Larranaga is entering her first season at the helm of her alma mater after serving the previous two years as the program's assistant coach. She inherited a team that returns three starters and seven letter winners and also signed five high school senior and one junior college transfer to strengthen the roster.

"We are thankful to Flint Hills Resources and recognize their generous commitment to the Nanook Classic as the 2013 title sponsor," Larranaga said. "It is encouraging to work with a company whose dedication to our local community is evident through their actions and rapport. Student-athletes from around the nation travel to Alaska for our unique tournament and FHR Alaska has ensured the 2013 Nanook Classic will be a memorable and competitive Alaskan experience for all."
