The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences will hold its first weekly seminar Wednesday, Sept. 2, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. via Zoom. The talk will be offered by Ruth Musgrave, assistant professor in physical oceanography, Department of Oceanography, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

The nature of internal tides at the coast

In this talk, Musgrave will discuss the dynamics of internal tides at the coast, where the presence of steep bathymetry supports coastal trapped waves and edge waves. In particular, Musgrave will discuss the generation of these waves at idealized coastal bathymetries, and contrast their properties to their open ocean counterparts. The generation and propagation of internal tides in coastal regions may have a role in setting the distribution of turbulent mixing along the coast, with implications for regional and global dynamics.
