The aurora borealis lights up the sky above the Russian blockhouse and other buildings on UAF's West Ridge early in the morning of Feb. 18, 2016. The Russian-American Co. built the blockhouse in the 1840s at Kolmakovsky Redoubt on the south bank of the Kuskokwim River about 20 miles upstream from Aniak. The blockhouse came to the university in 1929 and the UA Museum of the North restored it in 2011.
