Fan noise from the heat and power plant

The UAF Combined Heat and Power Project is in the final stages of commissioning. In
order to commission and test the plant it must be operated at full load, which requires
the use of load banks. They will be used until the end of May.
The load banks are currently located on the south side of Tanana Loop, opposite the
Lola Tilly Commons, in a parking lot by the Energy Technology Facility. The cooling
fans in the load banks produce noise that is noticeable from that portion of campus
and are loud in the vicinity of the walkway near the load banks.
The noise levels have been measured and are not at levels generally believed to cause
damage to hearing over the short time that a passerby would be in the area. The noise
level can be annoying however, and we recommend avoiding the walkway adjacent to the
load banks if possible.
