The Department of Recreation, Adventure and Wellness has formally changed its name to Nanook Recreation to better reflect the purpose and function of the department. Nanook Recreation is responsible for the Student Recreation Center, Patty ice arena, Patty pool and Outdoor Adventures. These facilities offer many programs to students and the community. While Nanook Recreation's primary focus is on enhancing the student experience with healthy activities, it also serves the greater Fairbanks community by offering memberships to the public.

The Patty Center locker rooms now have private shower stalls, and the saunas will be renovated this academic year. More weight equipment has been added, and new cardio equipment is on the way, including treadmills, stepmills and virtual reality bikes. Members can take classes to help them maximize their time in the gym. The racquetball courts have been converted to weight rooms for the sports teams, but Nanook Recreation still offers indoor group cycling classes on the second floor of the ice arena.

The climbing wall inside the SRC now has auto-belays, which allow climbers to reach the top of the wall without a belaying partner. New climbers to UAF must take a belay class, while experienced climbers need only a tutorial. Climbing classes are offered Monday through Friday at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Skiland passes will continue to be offered to any student taking 6 credits and paying the SRC fee.

The SRC will close for the holiday break, Dec. 10, 2018, through Jan. 10, 2019, to replace the track and court surfaces. SRC staff are exploring other locations to hold the surplus equipment and to allow for continued service through the holiday closure. The new, multipurpose flooring will be much better for your knees, and you may even shave a few seconds off your mile time!
