Discover Alaska lecture series spotlights Last Frontier

University of Alaska Fairbanks Summer Sessions and Lifelong Learning will present
the 11th annual Discover Alaska lecture series starting May 31.
Guest lecturers will offer an in-depth look at various aspects of Alaska in the free
10-part series. Lectures begin at 7 p.m. Wednesdays in the Murie Building auditorium
at UAF.
UAF Associate Professor of Geophysics Carl Tape will launch the series on May 31 with
“A century of earthquakes in Central Alaska.”
This series is sponsored by KUAC.

June 7 — “The modern blanket toss,” John Monahan, UAF Upward Bound director
June 14 — “Partnerships in fire resilience: How to prevent fires and prepare yourself
and your home,” Doug Schrage, UAF fire chief
June 21 — “Adventures of the Sikuliaq: Living and working on a research ship,” Brad
Moran, UAF College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences dean
June 28 — “To protect and to share: A walkabout of two northern national parks with
an oldtyme ranger,” Greg Dudgeon, superintendent at Gates of the Arctic National Park
and Preserve and Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve
July 12 — “Why this former East Coast kid values America’s Last Frontier,” Don Striker,
superintendent at Denali National Park and Preserve
July 19 — “Alaskans in conversation,” Robert Hannon, KUAC journalist and on-call news
producer
July 26 — “The 150th anniversary of the Alaska purchase,” Dermot Cole, author and
journalist
Aug. 2 — “The history of the African-American community in Fairbanks,” Dorothy Jones,
UAF associate professor emeritus
Aug. 9 — “As green as it gets,” Karl Kassel, Fairbanks North Star Borough mayor
