University of Alaska Fairbanks head coach Cody Burgess announced that the women's basketball team signed Destini Lewis (Beaumont, Texas/North Platte CC) to a grant-in-aid and she will enter the program as a junior next season.
“She is going to be a good compliment to Benissa and April with her point guard abilities,” Burgess said. “We should be very fast!”

Burgess continued, “Destini has the ability to score and defend because of her speed. She comes from a junior college and has that upper level experience. She has already handled being away from home and we're looking forward for her to work with the other players here and having another athletic, quick guard.”

Lewis, a 5-4 guard, played the last two seasons at North Platte Community College where she helped the Lady Knights to a pair of postseason appearances in the National Junior College Athletic Association, including a Region IX and District F championship en route to a National Division II Tournament berth in 2010-11.
She was a two-time member of the Region IX All-Tournament Team, as well as a First Team All-Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference selection as a sophomore and Honorable Mention as freshman. Lewis was twice named to the Omaha World Herald All-Nebraska Team, with Second Team accolades as a sophomore and Honorable Mention honors as a freshman.

Lewis appeared in 59 games at North Platte and maintained career averages of 8.9 points, 2.7 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game. Last year, she scored just under 10.0 points per outing while averaging 3.5 assists. She had career-highs of 25 points, 10 rebounds, seven steals and six assists in her time at NPCC.

Lewis joins the list of Jacqueline Bartleson (Santa Fe, N.M./Fort Hays State), April Fultz (Rialto, Calif./San Bernardino Valley), Brianna Kirk (Noatak, Alaska/Napaaqtuggmiut), Ruth O'Neal (Fort Washakie, Wyo./Sheridan), Kristen Swim (Portland, Ore./Umpqua CC) and Samantha Thornton (Bremerton, Wash./Umpqua CC) on the list of women's basketball signees for next season.
