Danielle Dirks to speak about ending rape on campus

Danielle Dirks, a national expert on sexual violence on campuses, will speak Thursday, March 27, at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
The free public lecture, "The New Campus Anti-Rape Movement: Networked Survivors Fighting for Reform," will begin at 7 p.m. in the Brooks Building's Gathering Room.
Dirks, an assistant professor of sociology at Occidental College in Los Angeles, is a national expert on Title IX, the Clery Act and other organizational tools that can be harnessed to end sexual violence on campus. She is a key activist in the new campus anti-rape movement and is a featured author in the recent Ms. Magazine issue about sexual assault at colleges and universities. Her work was highlighted in a recent edition of the Chronicle of Higher Education. Dirks will also speak at the sociology department's awards ceremony.
Rape on campus is in the national and local news, with national studies documenting that one in five college women will be victimized. Rates of violence against women in Alaska are among the highest in the nation.
Dirks' visit to UAF is sponsored by the Women's and Gender Studies Program, Social Work Department, Justice Department, Women's Center, Sociology Club and Betty Jo Staser Memorial Fund.
