Doris Ann "D.A." Bartlett, assistant professor emeritus of English, passed away in the Pioneer Home on Saturday, Sept. 5.

D.A. contributed to the English Department and UAF for many years as instructor of English and in her final years as assistant professor of English, focusing on medieval literature. As a teacher, she earned a devoted following among undergraduate and graduate students. She could converse just as easily on Homer, Virgil and Chaucer as she could on such contemporary writers as New Zealand's Keri Hulme. D.A. retired in 2004, though she continued to teach part-time for the next several years.

D.A. also had a larger connection to the state. Her father, E. L. "Bob" Bartlett, was secretary of the Territory of Alaska under Franklin D. Roosevelt, the territory's delegate to Congress from 1945 to 1958 and one of Alaska's two U.S. senators from 1959 until his death in 1968.

A lifelong Alaskan herself, DA influenced the lives of students, staff and colleagues, exuding joy at teaching literature and writing while living in the Last Frontier.
